I didn't know about Noel Streatfeild!

I was just at coffee with yatima talking about Noel Streatfeild . I assumed Noel was a man and did some handwaving magic in my head like "and Noel was just kinda like Arthur Ransome: cool and maybe a little suspiciously pervy in his interests in the inner lives of young girls". Yatima insisted Noel must be a woman because the details of ballet were totally correct. Yay, wireless, because we looked it up and not only is her name Mary Noel, she also wrote a whole book about E. Nesbit.

This may not be news to many of you, but it was to me!

I loved Noel Streatfeild so damned much! Still do, to be honest; her books are my comfort reads for when I'm so tired and sad that I don't have the energy for anything I haven't read a hundred times before. Probably my favourite of them all was Apple Bough, but they were all good, even the Gemma books, which were late Streatfeild and a lot thinner than the rest.

In hey biography it implies that she had at least one lesbian affair with a dancer/actress (?) she was on tour with.

If you can ever get hold of A Vicarage Family it's a fictionalised account of her childhood - one that apparently greatly angered her fathers parishioners as they felt she was slandering him to make herself look good, (and that she was ungrateful)
